The client was an American firm providing desktop software for forex and commodity trading. They had a website allowing the users to download the software and manage their license. The client wanted to do maintenance work for the website and improve its performance.

[/tab]
[tab name="Challenge"]

Before the client reached Citigo, their website ran quite unstably. There were a large number of faults in its operation process, leading to interruptions or errors in users’ transactions and communication with their brokers. Besides, the website contained a complex download procedure, in which users had to pass a complicated registration process before they downloaded the software.

[/tab]
[tab name="Solution"]

On comprehending the issue, Citigo determined that there would be a Dedicated Team to assist the client in day by day maintenance work. A team of 3 dedicated developers were formed.

Fixing all bugs was quite hard at first when Citigo team had to rely entirely on the client’s reports. The dedicated developers then decided to make a review on the problems solved to learn their features and causes. The team, therefore, actively eliminated all the causes to prevent similar problems from occurring. Hidden and potential problems were also detected and eradicated through the features that had been learned.

In addition, the team also advised the client to simplify the download and registration processes. Users needed only to provide an email address to download the software. And they could easily register their accounts and carry out transactions via the software installed on their computers.

[/tab]
[tab name="Result"]

After 17 months under Citigo dedicated team’s maintenance, the website’s performance had been substantially improved. The bugs recognized had been greatly reduced, thus improving the productivity of the website. From a low number of transactions exchanging at the same time, it can now facilitate 129 transactions simultaneously.

It has been a pleasure working with Citigo. They have a fast team of developers and very good managers. Even though we did initially have a few “teething” issues they were extremely fast to respond and always found solution to adjust and accommodate our needs. They also stayed calm and professional under pressure and have been an very complimentary and positive asset and addition to our outsourced development teams.

The client was an Australian entrepreneur who saw the gap in communication between people in need of a product/service and business/vendor providing that service/product. He wanted to create an extensive and effective business directory where customers can find the most reliable and highly recommended professionals operating in their neighborhoods.

[/tab]
[tab name="Challenge"]

Basically, the system should help enable the two following tasks:

People in need of a product or service: To contact the product or service providers available in their areas quickly

Businesses/Vendors: To receive inquiries from potential customers and respond promptly to the inquiries at low costs. Indeed, the system will only charge the businesses/vendors for every inquiry they receive from their potential customers.

To complete the two tasks, the system should be able to reflect clearly to potential customers the locations that the vendors or businesses wishing to travel to. Besides, it should include an efficient method of communication that would enable businesses or vendors to respond to their customers’ requirements promptly.

[/tab]
[tab name="Solution"]

On learning the specifications of the project, Citigo team decided that the system should include the two following features to fulfill its tasks:

Geographic Information System (GIS): This structure will update all the places that the businesses/vendors indicate their willingness to travel to. When customers looking for a business/vendor, they only need to fill in their location or choose the location from the map, GIS will then provide the customers with businesses/vendors able to serve in the neighborhood.

SMS integration: To enable the prompt and efficient communication between businesses/vendors and their potential customers, Citigo recommended the communication be processed through an integrated SMS system. When a customer chooses to connect a business/vendor through the website, the requirements will then be transferred to the business/vendor under the form of a SMS. The business/vendor can then respond quickly his/her availability to the system and the customer will be informed accordingly. Communication between the business/vendor with customer will then be carried out through SMS.

[/tab]
[tab name="Result"]

A few months after its launch, the website saw hundreds of Australian businesses and vendors register. The system has now expanded to the United Kingdom and New Zealand and has become one of the most well-known commercial ports among people and businesses/vendors three.

[tab name="Client"]

The client is an Australian not-for-profit organization, which provides services to assist people who are blind or have low vision, assisting them in achieving the possibilities they choose in their life. The client wanted to build a retailer system with facilities that would enable retailers who have limited vision to carry out transactions easily and precisely.

[/tab]
[tab name="Challenge"]

The biggest problem to blind people or people with low vision is that they cannot view the computer screen clearly. Therefore, it would be extremely difficult for them to use the mouse to control and progress the work. Moreover, as they cannot have a precise sense of the working process, they will probably get loss in a complicated system with various steps and functions.

[/tab]
[tab name="Solution"]

Citigo envisioned that accessibility and convenience would be the two most important features of the system.

For accessibility, the system would comply with international standards for Web accessibility. A screen reading software would be integrated into the system to allow people with limited vision to understand the information appearing on the screen. Besides, shortcut keys would also be fully utilized as a substitute for the mouse. In order for screen reading software and shortcut keys to fully reflect information on the screen, the design and coding of all parts of the system would be consistent and contain adequate supporting data.

For convenience, Citigo suggested that dialogue boxes would be used instead of pop-up windows. With dialogue boxes, users would have to fill in the required information before moving to the next content. This would help users avoid being loss in a complicated system, containing various steps and information tabs. Besides, dialogue boxes are not blocked by some computer systems; therefore, users can avoid missing important requirements. In addition, Citigo also enabled the quick search function in every information form, facilitating the retailers in finding the needed information quickly.

[/tab]
[tab name="Result"]

Three months after the completion of the project, the system was launched successfully in 34 stores in Australia with nearly 100 employees who are blind or have low vision. Potentially, it will become one of the leading retailers systems in Australia with full accessibility to benefit disabled people, bringing them equal opportunity to actively participate in the society.

[tab name="Client"]

The client was a big Australian consulting firm specialized in assessing candidates for specific positions or jobs. They had expertise in analyzing behavioral characters, rating behavioral and occupational tests and simulations, and applying the results to assess the suitability of a candidate to a position. The client wanted to build a system that would facilitate them in their assessment process.

[/tab]
[tab name="Challenge"]

Prior to working with Citigo, the client employed a working procedure in which most steps were done manually, leading to low working productivity. They, hence, wanted a system that would help them do all the storing, calculating and reporting work automatically, therefore reducing the time required while increasing the precision of the assessment.

However, as a company performing in a non-IT sector, the client could only initiate the ideas of how the system would be used without any specifically description or clear perception on how the final product would technically be.

[/tab]
[tab name="Solution"]

Foreseeing the difficulties in shaping the right direction for the whole project from the starting point, Citigo decided to employ the agile development approach, in which we divided the project into several phases. In each phase, we sent the client a prototype, which included the model of what would be done in that phase. Based on the client’s comments on the prototype, Citigo team adjusted the direction and implemented the project accordingly.

Besides, one added-value Citigo provided for the project was the integration of the CMR system into the HR assessment port with a single sign-in procedure. This technique allowed the sales team of the client to get access to their customers’ database and information of potential candidates easily, increasing their working efficiency.

[/tab]
[tab name="Result"]

The system built eventually was technically far different from what the client had initially perceived. However, its business usefulness matched exactly what they wanted. Two months after launched, the new system had helped the client successfully work with nearly 40 organizational customers and give out precise assessment of more than 100 candidates for senior positions. Their customers and partners included big names such as Australia Post and Australian ANZ Bank; and the most recent partner was Jordan Belfort, the infamous American motivational speaker and recognized salesperson.

[tab name="Client"]

The client is a multi-award winning online travel service with headquarters in Australia and branches in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Its principle is to give customers easy access to the lowest flight fares without compromising great service. Essentially, the client runs a comprehensive data retrieval and extraction system to find the cheapest fares available, taking into account discounts through its consolidator network.

[/tab]
[tab name="Challenge"]

In 2006, the client launched a business intelligence initiative to get analytical reports from its massive database and other competitors. The project dragged for 1 year with no positive result. Several factors contributed to its failure:

The data extraction tool failed when the target data structure changed.

The report generation was too slow (about 5 – 10 minutes).

The report was hard to customize.

Given the critical role of the initiative in supporting decision making, the client was then looking for an alternative service provider to revive the project from the verge of failure.
[/tab]
[tab name="Solution"]

Citigo came up with several innovative solutions to address the problems:

Replicating required data: Clearly, it was not wise to get analytical report from a transactional database with millions of records. It also affected routine operation. Citigo developed a background service that replicated required data during night time hours in a separate analytics database.

Writing custom data extraction tool: The problem with commercial data extraction tools is that it is almost impossible to stay adaptable with the change of target data. By writing a custom data extraction tool, Citigo could perform tweak whenever changes occur at target data.

Using JavaScript to control report generation: Raw report data are mashed with JavaScript to produce nice looking and customizable reports.

At first, Citigo employed several experts in business intelligence and database tuning to build proof of concept. After seeing impressive improvement in report generation time, the client decided to hire a dedicated team from Citigo to implement the system and support.

[/tab]
[tab name="Result"]

The failed project has revived as a strategic success for the client. Report generation time was reduced more than 500 times. The new powerful and intuitive report system helped the client make wise business decisions, which resulted in major market share gain. As a fruitful result, the client won the best travel agent website award in 2010 and was able to expand the business to several branches globally.

[/tab]

[tab name="Client"]

The client is a US-based award winning health care technology company which provides integrated electronic medical report (EMR) and practice management system (PMS). Founded by a physician who has its own vision of EMR system, the company is now representing thousands of medical practitioners and patients across the United States.

[/tab]
[tab name="Challenge"]

Thanks to the historical health care reform enacted by the US government in 2010, adoption of EMR and PMS among small and medium clinics has surged. The client, being in the industry for a decade, experienced high demand for new features as well as system support. However, it would be too costly to scale the in-house development team within a short period of time.

In addition, the client was also planning to migrate the system to a new platform, which requires massive research and execution effort. The problem became clear: how to get a reliable outside team at affordable rate.

[/tab]
[tab name="Solution"]

Citigo realized that the critical success factors in this partnership are security and domain knowledge:

Security: both software and data are critically sensitive, so strong security measure needs to be in place to protect intellectual asset for the client.

Domain knowledge: healthcare is a complex domain with many industry standards. Without understanding the workflow and concepts, it would be easy to break other things while fixing a particular issue.

To address these factors, the company formed a dedicated team including four experienced developers and one tester, who would work side by side with the client, conducted intensive domain training for the developers and tester and deployed separate infrastructure for them to work out the tasks. Special source code control and quality assurance policies were introduced as an additional layer of protection.

[/tab]
[tab name="Result"]

Citigo dedicated team has picked up with development pace much faster than expectation. Within two weeks, it has actively participated in resolving critical issues. After two months, the team gained confidence from the client to develop new features. Other than support and development role, the team also proposed several ideas to enhance the products.

The client was a Singaporean entrepreneur who has strong interest in education. Inspired by the idea that learning is most effective when it is fun and indirect, the client was keen on building a learning system in which learning items are games, videos and songs. The system should be designed with “software-as-a-service” in mind, so that it would be used by multiple schools with no installation hassle.

[/tab]
[tab name="Challenge"]

To make learning fun, the system has to be fun. The biggest challenge is to design an inspirational interface that is attractive and simple to the main audience, i.e. kids. However, behind the simplicity is real sophistication. The system needs to intelligently determine the performance of each student to adjust learning items to be displayed accordingly.

[/tab]
[tab name="Solution"]

Citigo designer conceived the design with a methodological approach. Interviews were made with client to understand the business value proposition. The cartoon style design makes it familiar to kids at kindergarten levels, who are the main target of the system. The image of children with different color represented solidarity spirit, an important element in a multi-cultural country like Singapore. The lightweight theme made it easy for students to navigate and focus.

Behind the scene, a complex algorithm was developed to prioritize learning items automatically based on students’ performance. As such, students are able to work on more and more difficult tasks without being aware.

On the technical side, Citigo developed the system entirely using open source technology stack: Linux, Apache, PHP, and MySQL. Specifically, to reduce the development time, Citigo used Codelgniter framework.

[/tab]
[tab name="Result"]

Since the development of the system, we have received constant positive feedback from the client. Several schools have signed up for trial even before development is finished.

The client is a leading mortgage brokerage firm in Canada with over 500 mortgage agents and brokers in its network. Agents and brokers act as partners to the firms, sharing some common facilities, yet maintaining a level of independence in terms of business development. A strategic factor to its success is the emphasis on using technology to provide added value to its network.

[/tab]
[tab name="Challenge"]

Currently, the client is running a hierarchical network which includes mortgage brokers and agents. Therefore, the client wants to control the content of this structure, in which a person in an upstream level like a mortgage broker company can manage the content created by people in a downstream level like an agent.

So the client would need a marketing tool that serves the following purposes:

Communicating common messages among members of the firm consistently.

Providing the flexibility so that each agent or broker can differentiate the content of his/her/its work.

[/tab]
[tab name="Solution"]

We envisioned this project as the backbone for the client’s information system. We wanted to build not only a web application, but also a hierarchical framework that other applications can be plugged in.

We saw that the newly built system would consist of a core engine and a list of extensions. The core was essentially the hierarchical permission framework, which could deal with any type of object. Extensions were business-oriented modules that could be plugged into the core. Each extension would serve a business purpose.

We defined two types of objects involved in this system: business object and system object. Business objects are objects that serve as a real business purpose. Adding or removing a business object does not make the system dysfunctional. System objects are objects belonging to the core, so they must exist even when the system does not serve any business purpose.

[/tab]
[tab name="Result"]

It now becomes easy when the client wants to integrate the CMS with other system. What they need is to develop an extension that interfaces with that system. What is truly powerful is the fact that the other system can now leverage the core, including permission control and subscription. The CMS has been now deployed to over 500 mortgage brokers and agents in the client’s network. Since the deployment of the new system, the client has given us positive feedback on the system.

[tab name="Client"]

The client is an Australian start-up, founded by the director of a famous recruitment agency specializing in IT domain. Observing the hesitance of job seekers when dealing with job agents, the founder has envisioned a new platform which connects job seekers directly to employers. Started in 2008, the company has now grown to be one of the leading job search engines in Australia, serving nearly 1,000 employers and 20,000 job seekers.

[/tab]

[tab name="Challenge"]

Having a great idea and vast domain experience but no technical expertise nor big budget, the founder needed to make a tough decision of whether to build his own technical team or to outsource. Although it is the right job classification that really makes the site useful, it could never become a success without a fast and scalable system. Eventually, the client decided to outsource technical design, implementation and support to an IT service company while the full-time staff would focus on domain related work such as classifying jobs and developing business partners.

[/tab]

[tab name="Solution"]

Essentially, the system features an engine that can frequently collect and extract job information from employers’ websites automatically. As of 2008, the web had much evolved and there was many ways that web data can be generated, specifically via different software frameworks. To make things worse, the increasing popularity of Javascript meant web data can be dynamically rendered based on user interaction. Building a super algorithm that works automatically for all kinds of website would be an unpractical option. However, we would certainly not want to treat each website as an ad hoc extraction project.

Citigo’s final decision was to strike the balance between total automation and manual. A generic extraction framework that deals with majority of websites was then built, and for exceptional cases, support engineers would provide special treatments. This turned out to be a perfect option, reducing the time to market, yet keeping the marginal cost (the cost of supporting one extra employer website) low.

After a period of time working together under the Project Based model, the client and Citigo agreed that there should be dedicated team working along with the client to deal with the ever rising changes and constant feedback from the end users. The client, therefore, moved to the Dedicated Team model with a team of 4 – 7 engineers working right under the client’s management.

[/tab]

[tab name="Result"]

From nothing, the website is now one of the most favorite destinations for job seekers. There, they are guaranteed that what they see are latest jobs from direct employers, not mysterious recruiting agents. Every month, 20,000 job seekers explore work opportunity from nearly 1,000 employers. The number of visits surge to 300,000.

Three years of hard work have been eventually paid off. Given its promising performance, the client has just been invested several millions dollar to bring the service to a new plateau. And Citigo is now eager to unleash its innovation capability in this next journey.
